BCCA Update on Private Members Bill for Prompt Payment
As reported yesterday, Liberal MLA and Opposition Critic Mary Polak introduced an unexpected Bill for Prompt Payment Legislation in the House. The BCCA has been advocating for prompt payment legislation for over a year and has met with party leaders and MLAs to educate them on the importance of the issue.
Attorney General David Eby holds jurisdiction on this topic in BC, and so we have worked closely with him, in person, and through written communications. In all of this activity, we have partnered with ECABC and other industry stakeholders.
Private Members Bills rarely become legislation, but we appreciate the efforts of the MLA's to support the industry on this topic.
- In support of the Private Members Bill, MLA Shirley Bond pushed AG Eby on the topic in Committee late yesterday afternoon.
- Mr. Eby said he hadn’t seen the Bill, but that his team is well aware of industry's position, is watching the other provinces closely, and waiting for the BC Law Institute to report out on the Builders Lien at the end of June.
- MLA Bond stressed the urgency and asked him to make prompt payment legislation a priority.
Note that other jurisdictions have failed on prompt payment due to inadequate input from the industry and owners prior to legislation being voted. Therefore, we’re working to ensure that we have input on the Bill as it goes forward.
