Each BC region has a variety of construction work available. The more flexible you are with your job search location, the more likely you are to be successful in securing a job.

Be sure to research all regions of British Columbia to find out where your skills are in demand. Once you have identified these regions or cities, you will know where the best opportunities are for you and your preferred line of construction work.

Northern BC

Residential

Construction work: In Northern BC, there are a lot of resource projects and infrastructure being built. The population in Northern BC is quite low, but there’s a lot of mining, oil and gas, and other industrial work available. There are also a number of proposed LNG plants. These are expected to start development within the 1-2 years. As roads and camps are built to accommodate a growing population, more Commercial, Residential and Institutional construction will develop to support these growing communities.

Weather conditions: This region gets colder winter months with temperatures dropping below freezing. Since construction work in this region will include outdoor work, appropriate clothing such as a heavy coat, clothing layering and proper insulated footwear is essential.

Lower Mainland

Lower Mainland

Construction work: In the Lower Mainland, where the city of Vancouver is located, you’ll find a lot of high-rise development, commercial and institutional work. This region has a lot of work in every area of construction.  

Weather conditions: In the winter months, there is not be much snow in this region, but rainfall will be heavier. A raincoat and water-proof footwear will be required for those working outdoors.

Vancouver Island

Residential

Construction work: On Vancouver Island, you’ll see a bit of everything when it comes to types of construction work. There is commercial building, a lot of home building,
along with hospital, school upgrades and renovations. 

Weather conditions: Rainfall is heavy here throughout the year, and you will not see much snowfall during the winter months. A raincoat and water-proof footwear will be required for outdoor work. Layering clothing will also be beneficial.

Southern Interior

Residential

Construction work: As for the Southern Interior, much like Vancouver Island, you’ll see a bit of everything:
institutional, commercial, residential and industrial work. 

Weather conditions: This region gets colder in the winter months. Due to the unique climate in this region, summers are the hottest in BC while the winters are cooler. Since construction work in
this region will include o
utdoor work, appropriate clothing such as a heavy coat, layered clothing and insulated footwear is crucial.
